Before You Start

Clear two to three hours of real timeDon't try to do the whole house in one evening
Pull out a donate box and a trash bag before you touch anythingDecisions are faster when there's already a place for things to go
Open windows for airflow while you cleanIt clears dust and cleaning-product fumes
Test every smoke and carbon monoxide alarm and swap batteries if they're more than a year oldThis is the one safety check people skip because nothing seems urgent until it is

Kitchen

Empty the fridge and pantry, toss anything expired, wipe shelves down
Wipe inside of cabinets and drawers, especially near the stove where grease builds up
Run a deep-clean cycle on the oven and microwave
Clean refrigerator coils and vacuum behind/underneath itDust buildup makes the compressor work harder and shortens its life
Run an empty hot cycle in the dishwasher with a cleaner to clear mineral buildup

Scrub grout and tile, replace a stained or moldy shower curtain liner
Re-caulk around the tub or shower if you see black mold in the seams if mold in caulk seamsBleach won't kill it long-term if the caulk itself is compromised
Clean the exhaust fan coverA dusty fan can't clear moisture, which is what lets mold grow in the first place
Go through the medicine cabinet, dispose of expired medication properlyMost pharmacies have a take-back box rather than flushing or trashing it loose
Wash bath mats and towels you've been reusing all winter

Wash all bedding, pillows, and mattress protectors on hot
Flip or rotate the mattress if the manufacturer recommends it
Dust blinds, ceiling fans, and light fixtures before vacuuming floorsDust falls downward
Vacuum under furniture and behind the couch cushions
Wash or vacuum curtains and drapes
Go through one closet, pull anything unworn in a year into the donate box

Replace the HVAC filterA clogged filter strains the system and recirculates dust all summer
Clean the dryer lint trap thoroughly and check the vent hose for lint buildupLint-clogged dryer vents are a leading cause of house fires, and this is the one spring task with real fire risk attached
Vacuum dust out of air vents, baseboards, and behind radiators
Check whether your water filter is due for replacement if has water filter
Wipe down light switches, door handles, and remotesHigh-touch spots that get skipped all winter

Take the donate box to a drop-off within the weekIt's the step everyone lets sit in the garage for months
Haul trash and recycling out same-day rather than letting it linger
Restock basic cleaning supplies so next time isn't a special trip
Swap heavy winter bedding, coats, and boots into storage if short on closet space
