Set Up the Gear

Buy a turntable with a separate cartridge and adjustable counterweightSkip the cheap all-in-one suitcase players — they damage records
Choose a turntable with switchable 33⅓ and 45 RPM speedsMake sure it has adjustable speed settings (33 1/3 and 45 RPM) so you can play both albums and singles
Decide between manual and automatic operationManual turntables require you to place the tonearm on the record and lift it off when it ends and give greater control, while automatic ones lift and place the tonearm for you
Get a way to hear it: powered speakers, or a receiver plus passive speakers
Set tracking force and anti-skate to the cartridge maker's spec before first playPlaying with the wrong tracking force wears the stylus and the grooves; use a digital gauge or the built-in dial, matched to the manufacturer's number
Align the cartridge (check the null points with an alignment protractor) if it wasn't factory-mounted if bought turntable without pre mounted cartridge
Place the turntable on a level, stable surface away from speakersVibration from nearby speakers causes feedback and skipping

Start Buying Records

Set a rough budget per record before you start browsingSo you don't overspend chasing rare pressings
Buy 5–10 albums you already love to startRather than guessing at 'essential' collector lists
Inspect used records for scuffs, warps, and deep scratches before buyingHold at an angle to the light and sight down the surface
Check the sleeve and vinyl grade separately when buying secondhandA mint sleeve can hide a trashed record and vice versa
Ask to hear a used record play before buying if the shop allows it if higher priced or collectible used copies

Hold records by the edges and label onlySkin oils on the playing surface attract dust and cause permanent noise in the groove
Wipe new and used records with a carbon-fiber brush before every playRemoves surface dust that would otherwise get ground in by the stylus
Wet-clean visibly dirty or new-to-you used records once with a proper record-cleaning fluid and microfiber cloth, or a cleaning machine if you have oneA one-time deep clean removes mold-release residue and old grime that a dry brush can't touch
Replace flimsy paper inner sleeves with anti-static poly-lined onesUse anti-static inner sleeves and polypropylene outer sleeves
Return each record to its sleeve immediately after playingLeaving vinyl out collects dust and risks scratches from being knocked or sat on

Store records vertically, never flat or stackedStacking records on top of one another can lead to warping
Keep records packed snugly with a little give, not crammed tight or loosely leaningKeep them upright with even pressure — not too tight, not too loose (approximately 1.4 cm per record)
Use shelving rated for the weight, not flimsy furniture100 records weigh 23-30 kg, exceeding what most standard particle-board shelving can handle
Keep the room at a stable temperature and moderate humidityA room with stable temperature and humidity prevents warping and other damage over time
Keep records out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources like radiators or sunny windowsillsHeat softens and warps vinyl permanently
Add a felt or cork slipmat under records on the platter if your turntable didn't include oneReduces static and platter contact

Wipe down the turntable and platter regularlyCuts down on dust transferring to records
Sort your growing collection by whatever system you'll actually maintainAn unsorted pile stops getting played
Replace the stylus per the manufacturer's recommended hours or mileage if play records dailyMatters more if you play records daily; a worn stylus damages every record it touches
Log condition and purchase price for anything bought as an investment or rare pressing if collecting for resale valueOnly needed if you're collecting for resale value, not just for listening
