Before You Adopt

Confirm housing allows pets if rentingCheck your lease and get any pet policy in writing; landlords can require a pet deposit or breed/size restrictions.
Budget for lifetime cost, not just the adoption feeFood, vet care, supplies, and emergencies add up over the pet's life, and underestimating this is a leading cause of surrenders.
Match species/breed/age to your lifestyleResearch energy level, size, shedding, and lifespan against your schedule and living space.
Decide who in the household handles daily careAgree on feeding, walking, and vet-visit responsibilities before the pet arrives, not after.
Identify a shelter or rescue and their processShelters and rescue groups occasionally host adoption promotions where they reduce or waive fees, making adoption more accessible.
Ask the shelter about the pet's historyGet medical records, behavior notes, and reason for surrender before committing.

Prepare Your Home

Pet-proof every room the animal will accessCreate a dedicated, quiet space for the pet to decompress, secure cords, windows, and doors, and remove chewable items to protect both the pet and your belongings.
Remove or lock away toxic substancesKeep medications, lotions, and cosmetics off accessible surfaces, since ingestion can be fatal.
Block hazardous small objects and clothingKeep laundry and shoes behind closed doors, since drawstrings and buttons can cause choking or blockages.
Install gates or barriers as neededLimit access to stairs, off-limits rooms, or other pets until you know how the new arrival behaves.
Buy essential supplies in advanceFood, bowls, leash/collar or carrier, bedding, and species-appropriate enrichment (toys, scratching post, litter box).
Set up ID before pickupHave a collar with an ID tag ready for the ride home in case of an escape during transport.

Read the adoption contract fully before signingMany agreements legally bind you to spay/neuter deadlines, microchipping timelines, and return-to-shelter clauses; violating them can carry civil penalties in some states.
Confirm spay/neuter status and any required deadlineSome jurisdictions mandate sterilization by law, and shelters may require proof of compliance.
Confirm microchip status and register your contact infoMany adoption agreements require microchipping as part of the adoption process, implanting a small chip under the pet's skin that contains a unique identification number; an unregistered or outdated chip is useless if the pet is lost.
Keep copies of all paperworkVaccination records, spay/neuter certificate, and the signed adoption contract — you'll need these for licensing and the vet.
Pay the adoption fee and get a receiptFees typically fund the initial vet care, vaccines, and sometimes microchipping already provided.

Confine the pet to one quiet, secure area at firstA newly adopted pet may feel nervous and overwhelmed by new sounds, smells, and people, so give them time and space and don't force interactions.
Establish a routine immediatelyConsistent feeding, bathroom, and rest times speed adjustment.
Introduce other household pets gradually and supervisedSeparate feeding areas at first to prevent resource-guarding conflicts.
Watch for signs of illness or injuryLethargy, vomiting, or not eating within the first day warrants a vet call.
Supervise children around the new pet at all timesA stressed animal is more likely to bite or scratch during adjustment.

Schedule an initial veterinary examConfirm vaccination status, screen for parasites, and establish a baseline health record even if the shelter provided care.
Register the pet's license with your city/county if where local law requires itMost municipalities require proof of rabies vaccination and a paid license within a set window (often 30 days).
Complete any adoption-required microchip registration deadline if conditionalSome contracts require registration within 30 days of adoption; missing it can breach the agreement.
Enroll in pet insurance if desiredApply early, since pre-existing conditions found later won't be covered.
Start basic training and socializationOnce the pet is more comfortable, work on basic training and positively reinforce good behaviors.
Update your will or emergency plan to name a caregiver for the petEnsures continuity of care if you're incapacitated.
