Phase 1: Define What You Need

Identify species-specific needs if exotic pets birds or reptilesExotic pets, birds, or reptiles need a practice with an exotics-experienced vet, not just any small-animal clinic.
Set a search radius based on urgency toleranceA 10-minute drive matters far more during a bleeding emergency than during a routine annual visit.
Decide your budget range before you start callingKnowing your ceiling now prevents being pressured into unaffordable treatment decisions during a future crisis.
Check whether your pet insurance or wellness plan restricts you to a network of providers if has pet insurance

Phase 2: Build a Shortlist

Ask your breeder, shelter, rescue, or referring vet for recommendations
Search for AAHA-accredited hospitals near you using the official lookup toolClinics with this accreditation "can be found through this lookup tool."
Note that accreditation is a strong but not exclusive signalIt "is a strong indicator of quality, but it should not be the only factor when choosing a veterinarian," since some non-accredited hospitals still provide excellent care.
Verify the veterinarian's license is active with your state veterinary licensing boardAn unlicensed or disciplined practitioner is a legal and safety red flag you cannot see from a website alone.
Read a handful of recent reviews for patterns (communication, billing surprises, wait times), not isolated complaints

Confirm hours match your scheduleScheduling preventative visits "may be offered over different hours than emergency walk-ins."
Confirm whether the practice itself handles emergencies or refers outEvery AAHA hospital "must provide, or have access to, 24-hour emergency service for its clients," so know your closest emergency option regardless.
Ask which payment methods and financing options (e.g., payment plans) they acceptAn unexpected surgery can run into the thousands, and you don't want to discover payment friction mid-crisis.
Check parking, accessibility, and whether large or fearful animals can wait outside instead of a crowded lobby

Ask about board-certified specialists on staff or a clear referral pathwaySuch specialists have "completed several additional years in an internship and residency program" with rigorous testing in fields like surgery, cardiology, and neurology.
Ask who else you'll interact with besides the vetYou will "potentially engage with several different team members before you meet directly with the Veterinarian."
Confirm the practice performs annual (or twice-yearly for seniors) wellness exams as standard"Every pet should visit the vet for a preventative care appointment annually," and visits are "encouraged every six months" as pets age.
Ask whether dental care includes X-rays, not just visual inspectionRoughly half of dental disease lies below the gumline and can't be seen without radiographs.
Ask about pain management and anesthesia protocols for proceduresInconsistent protocols are a genuine safety and welfare risk, especially for older or high-risk pets.
Tour the facility if possible and ask about infection-control practices (isolation of contagious patients, sterilization)Relevant if your pet will ever be hospitalized or boarded there.

Book a first "get to know you" appointment (often a wellness visit) rather than waiting for an emergency to meet the vet
Observe how the vet and staff handle your petGentleness and low-stress handling matter as much as technical skill.
Ask direct questions about diagnosis explanations, treatment options, and cost estimates, and note whether answers are clear before you agree to anything
Request that they begin (or continue) microchip registration and verify it annually if pet not microchipped or registry lapsed
Confirm they will send/receive medical records from your previous vetGaps in vaccination and treatment history can lead to unsafe duplicate procedures or missed conditions.

Establish this practice as your pet's official primary/regular vet on fileNeeded for boarding, insurance claims, and emergency referrals.
Keep a personal copy of vaccination records and major test resultsYou may need these on short notice for boarding, travel, grooming, or a second opinion, and not all clinics respond quickly to record requests.
Schedule the next preventive visit before you leave so it doesn't get lostAnnual for adults, every six months for seniors.
Re-evaluate the relationship if you notice recurring billing surprises, rushed appointments, or unclear explanationsSwitching vets is easier and lower-risk than tolerating a poor fit long-term.
