Here's the sequence that actually works, plus everything else that needs your new name once the official records catch up.

Get the paperwork lined up first

Get certified copies of your marriage certificate or divorce decreeEvery agency below needs an original or certified copy; photocopies and notarized copies are rejected outright. Order several at once since some offices keep what you send by mail.
Check your divorce decree explicitly restores your former or maiden name if divorce onlyThe SSA can restore a maiden name or any prior name on file from a divorce decree, and other government agencies may accept it too. If the judge didn't include that language, ask the court to amend it before you try to use the decree as proof.
File a separate court petition if you want a name other than a former legal name if wanting new name not previously usedYou can only transition to whatever name is on the court order for a court-petitioned name change; marriage or divorce paperwork alone won't get you a brand-new name that wasn't previously yours.

Update Social Security first — everything else depends on it

Bring only original or certified documentsThe SSA can only accept original documents or documents certified by the custodian of the original record — notarized copies or photocopies which have not been certified are not acceptable, and any document you use must be recent and show both your old and new names.
