Check Your Eligibility and Current Status

Confirm basic eligibilityYou generally must be a U.S. citizen, meet your state's minimum age (usually 18 by Election Day, though some states allow registration at 16–17), and be a resident of the state/county. Some states restrict eligibility for people with certain felony convictions — rules vary widely by state.
Check whether you're already registeredBefore filling out a new form, look yourself up on your state's official voter-registration lookup tool to avoid a duplicate or conflicting registration.
Verify your registered address matches where you live now if if moved since last registeredAn outdated address can get your mail ballot sent to the wrong place or flag you at the wrong polling place.
Note your state's registration deadlineDeadlines range from same-day registration on Election Day to a cutoff several weeks earlier; missing it can bar you from voting in that election with no way to fix it after the fact.

Register or Update Your Registration

Gather required ID/documentationMost states require a driver's license or state ID number, or the last four digits of your Social Security number, to complete the form.
Choose a registration methodOptions typically include online registration through your state portal, the National Mail Voter Registration Form, in person at your election office, or via motor-vehicle/public-assistance agencies ("Motor Voter").
Fill out the registration form completelyLeave no required field blank; an incomplete form is a common reason applications get rejected or delayed.
Select a party affiliation if it affects your ballot if closed or semi closed primary stateOnly relevant in states with closed or semi-closed primaries, where your party choice determines which primary ballot you can request.
Submit before the deadline, by the required methodMailed forms must typically be postmarked by the deadline, not just received; online submissions must be completed and confirmed before the portal closes.
Keep a copy or confirmation receipt of your submissionThis is your evidence if your registration doesn't show up in the system later.

Recheck your status 1–2 weeks after submittingUsing the same official lookup tool, to confirm the state processed your application and recorded the correct address and party (if applicable).
Correct any errors immediately if the record is wrongAn uncorrected address or name mismatch can cause you to be sent to the wrong polling place or issued a provisional ballot.
Update your registration after any name, address, or party change if name address or party changeApplies whenever you move, marry, or otherwise change legal name, even within the same county.

Check your state's rules for voting in person vs. by mailOptions and deadlines differ significantly by state.
Request a mail/absentee ballot if you plan to use one if planning to vote by mailOnly if not automatically mailed to you; note the separate request deadline, which is often earlier than the registration deadline.
Confirm ID requirements for in-person votingMany states require photo ID or another form of ID at the polls; know exactly what's accepted before Election Day so you're not turned away.
Track your mailed ballot once submitted if state offers ballot trackingIf your state offers ballot tracking, use it to confirm your ballot was received and accepted, and to catch any "cure" notice if it was flagged for a signature mismatch.
Know your state's ballot "cure" process and deadline if mail ballot rejectedMost states give a limited window to fix a rejected mail ballot before your vote is discarded.

Locate your correct polling place in advanceUsing your state's official poll-finder, since it can change between elections even if your address hasn't.
Know the provisional-ballot processIf your name doesn't appear on the rolls at your polling place, you generally have the right to cast a provisional ballot, which is counted only after your eligibility is verified.
Verify your provisional ballot was counted afterward if provisional ballot castLook up the result through your state's provisional-ballot verification system, since it isn't automatically counted like a regular ballot.
