Before You Search

Write down your actual goal — a job, a raise, a license, or just curiosityThis decides how much rigor you need
Ask people who already work in the field which credentials employers actually recognizeA credential that looks great on a website but means nothing to hiring managers wastes your time and money
Check if a license or specific credential is legally required for the jobSome fields (nursing, real estate, contracting) require state-approved training, and the wrong course won't qualify you no matter how good it is

Vetting the Program

Look up the school's accreditation status directly on the U.S. Department of Education's or CHEA's database rather than trusting a badge on the siteUnaccredited "diploma mills" sometimes invent their own fake accrediting bodies
Confirm the accreditor itself is legitimate, not just that "an accreditor" existsCheck it's on the recognized list, not a lookalike name
Search the school or certifier's name plus "complaint," "scam," or "lawsuit" to surface red flags
Find out who actually teaches or issues the credentialA real institution or professional body, not an anonymous "team"
Check whether the certification is tied to a recognized industry body or is a one-off badge with no outside validation
Look for a syllabus or curriculum outline before paying, not just a sales page
Confirm how the program is graded and whether there's a final exam or project, not just video-watching

Get the total price including any exam fees, materials, software, or renewal costs, not just the advertised tuition
Ask directly whether the credential counts toward federal financial aid, employer tuition reimbursement, or academic credit elsewhere if relying on aid or reimbursementOnly matters if you're relying on aid or reimbursement, but skipping the check means you can't undo a non-transferable enrollment
Read the refund and cancellation policy before you payMany online programs have strict no-refund windows once you start
Check if payment is required upfront or in installments, and whether you can cancel a subscription-style program anytime
Watch for high-pressure sales tactics (countdown timers, "today only" discounts)Legitimate programs don't need to rush you

Search LinkedIn or job postings for the exact certification name to see if employers list it as a requirement or preferred qualification
Ask the program directly for graduate outcomes — job placement rate, average salary change, or completion rateBe skeptical if they dodge the question
Check how long the certification is valid and what's needed to renew or maintain it if certification expiresRelevant for professional certifications (like PMP or many IT certs) that expire
Confirm the format (self-paced, live cohort, deadlines) fits your actual schedule and learning style
Look for reviews on independent sites, not just testimonials posted by the program itself

Read the full enrollment agreement or terms of service, especially auto-renewal and cancellation clausesSome subscription programs quietly rebill you after the "free" period
Confirm what happens if you don't finish on time — extension fees, lost access, or forced restart
Save or screenshot the price, refund policy, and accreditation claims at the time you enrollIn case the site changes them later
Set a calendar reminder before any free trial or promotional pricing ends if on a free trialMissing it can mean an unwanted charge

Keep copies of all coursework, certificates, and transcripts as you go, not just at the endSchools and platforms shut down, and you may lose access to records later
Confirm your certificate or transcript request process before you need itSome platforms charge extra or take weeks
Note the exact credential name and issuing body as it appears on your certificateThat's what you'll list on resumes and licenses later
