Assess Your Needs

Identify fire risks by roomKitchens need agents for grease/oil fires, garages/workshops need coverage for flammable liquids, and any room with wiring or electronics needs a C-rated agent.
Plan for at least one extinguisher per floor, including the basement and attic"You'll want at least one fire extinguisher on each level of your home, including the basement and attic" and it's "especially important to have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen, since cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries."
Rule out solo extinguisher use for anyone who can't handle it physically"Young children and older adults should not use fire extinguishers," so plan for them to evacuate instead.

Choose the Right Extinguisher

Pick a multipurpose ABC-rated unit as your default"there are also multipurpose fire extinguishers that might be labeled 'B-C' or 'A-B-C' that can be used on most types of home fires," and "most home extinguishers are a combo of Class A, B, and C. They can put out most small fires."
Add a Class K unit for the kitchen if you fry often if fry oftenClass K extinguishers are made for "oils and fats used in cooking" and "use a fine mist of potassium compounds to create a soapy foam that cools and smothers the fire, preventing re-ignition."
Confirm the label shows independent-lab certification"Always look for the 'UL Listed' or 'ULC Listed' label on a fire extinguisher to ensure it is certified for use by a nationally recognized testing laboratory."
Compare the numeric rating, not just the letter classA higher number preceding each letter means greater effectiveness; "an extinguisher rated 8-A is roughly two and a half times as effective against Class A fires as one rated 3-A."
Select the largest unit every adult household member can handle"it is recommended to select the largest fire extinguisher that a user can safely and comfortably operate," echoed by advice to "choose one that is big enough to put out a small fire but small enough that you can handle the weight."
Weigh disposable vs. rechargeable before buying"disposable extinguishers are lighter and less expensive, but can only last about 10–12 years before they lose pressure and must be replaced," while rechargeable models can be serviced indefinitely.

Install and Place

Mount units in visible, reachable spots, not hidden awayExtinguishers "often get overlooked — tucked under a sink or hidden in a closet or basement" and should instead be "visible, with the label facing out."
Place units where fires are most likely to start while keeping them accessible"place a fire extinguisher on every level of a building" and keep them "accessible and visible where fires are most likely to start, such as kitchens and bedrooms."
Space multipurpose extinguishers for full coverageExperts recommend "having at least one multipurpose fire extinguisher every 40 feet throughout your home."
Keep the pin, gauge, and instructions visible and unobstructed on the mounting bracketSo anyone can check readiness at a glance.
Keep extinguishers away from stoves, furnaces, and direct sunSustained heat can degrade seals and pressure over time.

Learn and Prepare to Use It

Read your specific model's instructions before an emergencyOne-handed and two-handed trigger designs differ between brands.
Memorize PASS now"Pull the pin. Aim low at the base of the fire. Squeeze the lever slowly. Sweep the nozzle from side to side."
Use the extinguisher only under safe conditionsThe NFPA recommends using one only when "the fire is confined to a small area and isn't growing," "everyone else is out of the building," "someone has called the fire department," and "the room isn't filled with smoke."
Never use water on an oil or grease fire"never use water to put out an oil or grease fire — that's likely to make the fire worse."
Teach kids to get an adult rather than use the extinguisher themselves"when teaching kids about fire safety, tell them that the extinguisher is not a toy. They should get an adult for help"; the NFPA similarly recommends teaching children to get to safety rather than training them to fight it.
Contact your local fire department for hands-on training"encourage people to contact their fire department if they would like fire extinguisher training or have any questions."
Keep a working home fire escape plan as the real priority"fires can spread quickly, so the top priority is to get everyone out of the house safely," and extinguishers are "only part of your safety planning" alongside an escape plan and smoke detectors.

Maintain Over Time

Check monthly that the extinguisher is charged and undamaged"each month, make sure your extinguisher is fully charged, isn't damaged, and doesn't have a blocked nozzle."
Track age and recertification statusGuidance calls for using "portable fire extinguishers that are no more than two years old, unless certified by an expert" and to "replace older, uncertified extinguishers."
Replace disposable units once they reach the end of their service lifeThey "can only last about 10–12 years before they lose pressure and must be replaced."
Inspect for external damage before relying on any unit"ensure the nozzle does not have any external damage" and check gauge/meter readings regularly.
Have rechargeable units professionally recharged after any discharge, even partialA partly used extinguisher can't be trusted to perform fully again.
Re-walk your placement plan after renovations or room additionsNew layouts can push a space beyond the recommended coverage distance.
