Research and Shortlist Programs

Confirm the school is accredited through the U.S. Department of Education or CHEA databaseUnaccredited "degrees" won't qualify for federal aid, employer tuition help, or transfer credit, and some employers won't recognize them at all
Check for programmatic accreditation in your field if field requires licensureNursing, engineering, teaching, and social work often need a specific accrediting body beyond the school's general one, or you can't get licensed
Compare total cost, not just per-credit tuitionInclude fees, proctoring costs, and required in-person residencies
Ask each program how many credits they'll accept from your prior college workGet it in writing before you enroll, not after
Look up the program's graduation and employment outcomes if publishedA school reluctant to share these is a red flag
Talk to the school's disability or accessibility office if you'll need accommodations if need accommodationsOnline doesn't automatically mean flexible on deadlines or format
Check the state authorization list if you live somewhere other than where the school is basedSome states restrict which out-of-state online programs can legally enroll their residents, which can block enrollment or licensure later

Sort Out the Money

Ask your employer about tuition assistance or reimbursementGet the policy in writing, including any grade requirement, payback clause if you leave the company, and course-approval process
File the FAFSA at studentaid.gov even if you think you won't qualifyIt's the gateway to federal loans, grants, and many school-based scholarships, and some aid is first-come, first-served
Ask the financial aid office about aid specifically for adult or part-time studentsMany schools have scholarships general listings don't surface
Estimate your total borrowing before you sign anythingKnow your monthly payment after graduation before you take on debt that's very hard to discharge later
Check whether your program qualifies for the Lifetime Learning Credit or other tax benefitsAsk a tax preparer how it applies to your situation
Ask if the school offers a payment planSpreading tuition over the term can beat taking a loan for the same amount

Read your employer's education-assistance policy for conflict-of-interest or non-compete clauses if employer tuition assistanceSome companies restrict tuition help to job-related fields only
Tell your manager your plan once you've enrolled if need schedule flexibility
Block out a realistic weekly study schedule before classes startMost programs run 15-20 hours a week per full course load, and underestimating this is a top reason working adults drop out
Set up a dedicated study space and log-in routineEven one-hour blocks are easier to protect if they're consistent
Loop in your household on the time commitmentA partner or family who doesn't know why you're "disappearing" a few nights a week causes more dropouts than the coursework does

Submit official transcripts from every prior school you attendedMissing transcripts delay both your credit evaluation and your financial aid disbursement
Get your credit transfer evaluation in writing before your first termVerbal promises from an advisor aren't binding if the registrar decides differently later
Confirm your username, password, and platform access a few days before classes startLocked-out first days waste time you don't get back
Buy or rent required textbooks and software earlySome online courses need specific proctoring software installed and tested before exam day
Check the technical requirements for your coursesReliable internet, a working webcam and mic, and sometimes a specific browser or operating system
Find out how the school handles proctored exams if program uses proctored examsSome require a webcam-monitored test at a set time, which you'll need to schedule around work
Confirm your enrollment status meets any requirement tied to your fundingEmployer reimbursement and federal aid often require a minimum credit load or grade, and falling short can mean repaying money you already spent

Introduce yourself to your academic advisor and know how to reach themAt some schools this is a different person than your admissions contact
Find the tutoring, writing center, and tech support contacts before you need themMuch easier to locate when you're not already panicking over a deadline
Note every deadline for the term in one calendarOnline courses often feel lighter but carry the same hard cutoffs as in-person ones
Join a study group or cohort if the program offers oneIsolation is a common reason online students disengage
Check your grades and standing regularlyCatching a problem in week 3 is fixable; catching it in week 14 often isn't
